The movement of the times, the glory and sorrow of the city have all left their irreplaceable traces in his works.

"Beyond the Gaze" is the late Macau photographer Frank Lei's documentary photography about the city of Macau, and is also his first photographic publication since his passing.

As a photographer who is constantly creating, Frank's mobility during daily life makes him a wanderer in different fields in Macau, accumulating chances and moments in the midst of changes and passages.

This photobook includes a number of representative works that have never been published and seen before. Divided into eight chapters with 121 works, it presents some of Macau's uncommon cityscapes from before the handover in the 90s to the early years after the handover, and a chapter on the Hengqin project, which was the main focus of Frank's work before his death.

"After ten minutes or so, I finally made it back, and before the last few panels were sealed, I went into the empty room and pressed the shutter as if it was the only thing I could do, to leave some memories of this fading place."

- Frank Lei, ‘The Building and the Elderly’

——— Preface ———

“The most powerful thing about photography is that it leaves evidence of things that will eventually disappear, and Frank cared about what he saw so much that he pressed his shutter with empathy, moving his readers to feel the same way he did. In my opinion, this is a powerful testament of Frank’s photography skill.”

- Juan I-jong ,renowned photographer, ‘A Tender Gaze’
